Past Vs Present 2017

PAST 240 AO (37 Overs) – PRESENT 179 (28 Overs) – PAST WIN BY LOTS

With the Past being represented by players from the 80’s, 90′ and 00’s mustered from all parts of the country, lets face it, it was never going to be easy for the young bucks this year and so it proved to be.

Asked to “have a bat” by the Presents’ earnest skipper Mike Dixon, Jilesh and Devesh Patels opened for the Past by rolling back the years with some useful shots to all parts of the ground. Neither were run out and ball was smote to all stations before Jilesh (22) ducked under a bouncer and was bowled and Devesh (27) was given out for telling the Presents bowlers how to bowl. A good start had seen the openers pile on 50, but their demise only opened up the Presents bowling attack to greater torment. Hicksy and Coutouvidis then went on the attack, a massive six for Hicks was followed by a series of boundaries off a tiring bowling attack. 100 soon became 180 before Hicks (55) then Coutouvidis (49 – jug avoidance) fell chasing the runs. St John Farley and Geoff Dryden added about 20 each before the Past suffered a major collapse from 220-4 to 239 All Out. Most of the bowling force failed to register a run, first ballers for Cassie, Douglas and a duck for Cossey, kept the score to what the Present thought was a manageable level. Prab took 4 cheap wickets at the end (4-16), Dicko an expensive 2-47 and Hamza 2-35 off his spell.

Tea was taken (and jolly nice it was too) and the Present thought about reversing the order so little was the task in hand (or did they).

So let battle commence – lets say – it kind of didn’t as the Present found themselves 51-7 after only 11 overs. It was a mixture of good bowling – Ben Johns 2-11 amongst it, supported by fantastic fielding – Sinj taking an epic gulley catch to dismiss the young buck, Max Newbold for 14 and allegedly poor umpiring from Wassa (lbw for Felix after a claim of hitting the ball)  saw the fall from grace. Shane Cossey rattled through the middle order with final figures of 6-32.

But Dicko was still there (despite the lure of a chocolate biscuit being placed on a length outside off, on his entry to the game) and Sam Muller supported him ably at the other end. The Present gradually improved their position until the introduction of Cassie (I’m writing this so this is my take). Dicko found him difficult to get away and the pads were rattled a few times before he was lbw to the author on 49 (another jug avoidance) advancing down the wicket – yeah it was straight and was going to take yer middle stump out of the ground. With steam coming out of his ears, enough to power lighting for most of Central London he left the field.  Game over then at 100 – 8, not quite as there were still enterprising knocks from Wassa and Chicko (both 17) and Sam Muller made 46 not out before Cossey came back to finish up the tail.

A win (yet again) for the Past with rolling back the years performances from all and may be just a tad of over confidence on behalf of the Present team. Lets face it boys you were outclassed by a team of rare depth and quality. “Your boys took one hell of a beating”.
